John,
You know one of the gifts that we get from the garden: taking time to observe nature. Sitting in a shady place, as you describe, and watching the life that is all around us is both restful and entertaining. And I think it is a time when we can feel the connections that are between all living things.

As a gardener it's hard to stop and just sit and watch the garden... so maybe thirst is our body's prompting not only to drink, but to sit down and enjoy our surroundings while we sip that water.

Your right "Too late for what". Never really gave it a thought, just went and got a drink whenever I was thirsty.
The only problem was I have a nice place to sit and enjoy the drink and many time that turn into a fairly long sit.

On a hot day it is a cool shady place to sit and watch the other creatures doing their thing. Has a good view of bird feeders and our gardens.
