Report From PIA – September 7

Today my garden was telling me to slow the hell down. I tried to take some video (dipping back into Final Cut Pro after a few years off) but nothing was going right. I felt self-conscious, my nose was running and I was cranky, cranky, cranky.

I’m a person who likes to get a lot done, and I live with a man who is able to do more in one day than I complete in a week. So it’s hard to just stop. Nevertheless, I put the camera away.

It’s difficult to remember that by just sitting we are accomplishing something too. Rest and contemplation are important to our bodies and spirit, I know. Peaceful, new age song in the background here. But OMG – music becomes louder and more frenetic – how will I ever finish the garden, expand my career or make that video if I don’t get to work now?

My garden instructed me to slow down so first I wrote for awhile and then I sat under the grape arbor. Forcing myself to just sit, I watched my surroundings. One of the three grape vines has reached the top after only one summer, and the other three are close. I saw a raccoon paw print on one of the posts near the finch feeder. Hmmmmm. The boneset Eupatorium was filled with bees, an occasional Asclepias seed took flight and the Cimicifuga ‘Brunette’ smelled heavenly.

In some ways, I thought, it dishonors a garden not to sit and just watch it once in awhile. A garden is a lavish production complete with colorful costumes and a cast of thousands, but I’m often too busy working backstage to notice.

We need to savor our lives even as we live them.

The Asclepias seeds were ready to fly and I almost missed it!

Bees and wasps love this Eupatorium.

Ok, Ok.... it's impossible for me to sit still for long. I did take photos because the light today was perfect and I'd be a fool if I didn't pick up my camera. Look how good the Tradescantia ' Sweet Kate' is doing - I cut it down at the end of July when it was looking ratty, and it's back and blooming.
