Report From PIA – June 16
One of the sweetest things about humans is that we like to share the good stuff we’ve created with others. This alone can bring hope when we’re confronted with oil spills, corporate greed and selfish criminality on a daily basis.
Gardeners, in particular, are generous people. We’re willing to save seeds or dig out a section of a perennial plant if a total stranger admires it, and we would hand out home grown veggies on the street if we weren’t so busy weeding and harvesting.
We’re eager to share the fruits of our labors, and every summer thousands of gardeners open their properties for garden tours that raise money for non-profit organizations. Garden clubs, churches and art associations from coast to coast benefit from funds that come from a group of plant people who’re willing to say, “Yes. Come on in.”
I’m privileged to be in their company. This year, I’m opening Poison Ivy Acres to the public to benefit my church. On Wednesday June 30th, six gardens will be open from 10 AM to 4 PM. Tickets cost $25 each, or $37 including lunch, and may be reserved by calling the church office, 508-362-6381, Tuesday through Friday. The Garden Marketplace also will be open on the day of the tour at the church, 3330 Main St., Barnstable Village, where the luncheon, by reservation, will be served.
