Report From An Opinionated Gardener – December 2

I received a catalog from Uncommon Goods in the mail today. This is welcome at this time of year because I usually buy several Hanukkah/Christmas/New Year’s gifts from these folks. One offering has left me a bit flummoxed, however. I see that they sell Table Topics and Idea Cards, and the examples shown are as follows: “If you could have any view from your front porch, what would it be.” and, “Make up a holiday and a way to celebrate it.”

Of course The Garden Lady answers the first by saying, “Gardens” and the second with, “Gifts From The Garden Month” with a link to my website. But even if you’re not me, if you’re reading this blog I have a feeling that you don’t need cards to get the ideas or conversations flowing.

I do applaud Uncommon Goods and the manufacturers of these cards for knowing that contemplative discussions and personal examinations are important. Yes, yes, yes. Let’s look at everything more deeply, I say. Let’s be more reflective about what’s going on in our lives and how it all relates to everything else.

Still, it’s kind of sad that we need to buy this thoughtfulness, don’t you think?

"What? People need products to remind them to think about what's important?"
