A Lift-My-Heart Garden
Garden Reports and Rejoicing – July 16
If I had a magic wand I’d give everyone a garden to come home to.
One of the nicest things, I think, is to come home and see a collection of plants that you love. It lifts your heart at the time of day when you’re most likely feeling tired, and in need of revitalization.
Such greet-me-at-the-end-of-the-day-gardens would be composed of the flowers and plants that make the residents happiest. When it comes to lifting hearts, one size does not fit all. They wouldn’t have to be large; a collection of four or five plants would be enough for many people. In fact, for some a collection of containers would be the perfect lift-my-heart garden. An entry garden should be sized so that instead of being overwhelming to the residents they are manageable and are therefore empowering.
And although I envision a garden that greets you as you return home, I can imagine that some might want a lift as they sit on their back deck or look out the kitchen window. In fact, there should be no limit on the number of lift-my-heart gardens that surrounds a home.
For that matter, why stop at the space around our dwellings? Why not plant greeting gardens in other spaces? When we all find our magic wands we’ll make it happen quickly. In the meantime we’ll start with our hands.
