Today I’m starting a new category at Whole Life Gardening: Pet Peeves. Some of these will be garden related and some not. The first in this category occurred to me today as I was gardening. I am desperately trying to get some plants into the ground before winter, so today I was dashing about the garden, digging holes and watering things that were recently planted. In addition to this, I painted a fence that shields the electrical meters and continued with the effort to clean and organize the garage.

At some point in this activity I realized that I was thirsty. I finished what I was doing and then went into the house to get a drink of water. As I reached into the cupboard for a glass, the voices of several aerobics instructors and assorted health-conscious types echoed though my mind: “Once you’re thirsty, it’s too late.”

Have you heard this one? The claim is that once you are aware that you need a drink of water ” it’s too late.” And every time I remember this bit of advise I think “Too late for what?” Too late to be healthy? Too late to replace what moisture your body has lost? Too late to ever be hydrated again? Come on…

How do these things get started? It’s against all common sense. The feeling of thirst is obviously the way our bodies tell us to take a drink of water, already. In and out of the garden, we need to ask ourselves if what we are told is reasonable or not.
