Report From PIA – October 18
Today I read a news report about the people who died after spending time in a sweat lodge. The article I read said that those in the lodge were on a “spiritual warriors” retreat.
It is horrible when anyone who is seeking spiritual clarity or growth dies in the process, and I have absolutely no knowledge of what this gathering was about. But my initial reaction was to think, “Spiritual warriors? I think I’d rather be a spiritual gardener.” I don’t want to fight for the spirituality that is already within me…I need to cultivate it.
Similarly, I don’t think that gardeners should have to fight to have beautiful gardens. We don’t have to take an “us against them” mentality in our landscapes. We don’t need to fight nature, even when insects, diseases and other problems are present in our gardens.
What we do need to do, in our spiritual lives and in our gardens, is to pay attention and work at it. Cultivation of anything worth having means starting where you are, and being willing to prepare, improve and grow.
