Report From An Opinionated Gardener – October 27

Am I the only one who gets busy and assumes that things are growing just fine in my life, only to be brought up short by someone misunderstanding what I’ve done or said? I get focused on my own problems, desires and all-that-needs-to-be-done somehow thinking that others will know and understand. Big mistake.

Life goes on and seeds are sown, and suddenly we realize that things have been germinating that we had no intention of growing! Yikes!

This happens in the garden, of course. Suddenly those enthusiastic, self-seeding plants are everywhere, mostly in the spots where we don’t want them to grow. We’re abruptly aware that all of the tiny green seedlings that were sprouting a short time ago have grown huge, and the weeds are taking over.

In our gardens and our lives, seeds are being sown and we need to pay attention. I have some weeding and replanting to do.

Suddenly the green Agapanthus seedpods that were so ornamental at the end of the summer are cracking open and scattering seeds. Since this plant isn't hardy in my area I don't have to worry that it's going to grow where I don't want it. These seeds are a reminder, however, that we can stop noticing the progression of a situation and then stumble on problems that have germinated while our attention is elsewhere.
