Report From An Opinionated Gardener – October 21

When we learn something “by heart” it’s usually as a result of living with it, or consciously repeating it, over and over. Time is spent with that action, knowledge or truth, and subsequently we know it deeply.

If we garden by heart we acknowledge that we’re willing to put the effort into learning something genuinely, truly and profoundly. This is why gardening is different from landscaping: the gardener is going deeper.

The decision to create, pray, parent, work, compose, teach, or garden by heart recognizes that time needs to be spent on cultivating what we want to grow.

Gardening by heart means the confidence, gained over time, to put assorted plants together in a less-than-traditional way.
